The Polar Star is a 1972 Catalina 27 with the dinette interior. The boat was first registered in Nevada in June of 72 and was sailed in Lake Tahoe. It is hull number 469. In 1992 the head sail was replaced with rollar furling 135 and a 95% jib. The main was also replaced with a full batton main. In approximately 2000 the inboard engine was removed and an outboard was installed on a reinforced stern. The outboard controls were lead forward to the cockpit control pannel. The interior is fairly standard and well maintained. The wiring is fairly messed up and nothing is connected except the engine. The keel was replaced somewhere around the year 2000. This was probably due to rusty keel bolts - which were recalled by the factory. If not replaced they were said to rust. The depth sounder and the knot meter are on board but don't work, either because there is no power or because they are inoperative. Our first trips to the boat were dedicated to cleaning and to installing batteries. I ordered "Sailing for Dummies" so we could brush up on our skill set. I also ordered a couple of books on how to wire up the batteries and the 12 volt accessories. We purchased an inexpensive depth sounder/knot meter to use for the time being. I ordered the NOAA chart set for my laptop PC from eBay. When coupled with the GPS we use for Microsoft "Streets and Trips" it shows where we are on the chart. We will use paper charts for backup but the $16.95 GPS enabled chart set will be our primary navigation tool. |
